Blacklist Ban on Chinese Manufactures

Today marks day one of the contractor blacklist ban on Chinese Manufactured video surveillance cameras and telecommunications equipment used within the United States under the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA.

Backdoors, malicious code, and cybersecurity supply chain threats from the Chinese government has prompted the US Federal government to ban the use of these cameras and telecommunications equipment. More than 60% of these technologies are branded and sold by third parties under Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) contracts that come from China.

If your current security integrator or service provider sells or installs cameras that are manufactured by Dahua, Hikvision, Huawei or other “covered entities”, they are officially banned from bidding on Department of Defense contracts. Many temperature sensor cameras used for COVID-19 detection are made by Chinese manufacturers.

Other US Federal agencies, state and local government have followed suit by removing and replacing Chinese manufactured cameras from their physical security infrastructures citing significant cybersecurity concerns using weak authentication and cryptography that can be easily exploited.
